"We offer you a Departure Bonus," Trump announces he would be giving $1,000 to migrants who voluntarily leave the US.
To be clear, our office does not condone the messaging and agenda behind this program. We still advise that you explore all legal options with an immigration attorney before deciding to accept any such departure programs.
As one of its strategies in its deportation plans, the Trump administration is offering a bonus for voluntary departure, in addition to the travel expenses included if self-deportation is chosen.
Under this new proclamation, the United States government, with the "Come Home" project, offers immigrants a "dignified" option to leave the country voluntarily with support and financial assistance.
The now-famous "departure bonus" is considered by immigrants seeking to leave with this financial assistance along with their sponsored travel to return to their countries of origin. The executive order was issued just days after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced plans for the program.
What is the purpose of the program?
According to the Proclamation, the aim is to increase public safety by having “dangerous” undocumented immigrants leave voluntarily.
Some people argue that this program is just a way of making the government’s job easier to reduce immigrant populations in the U.S.
What does the program mention?
According to the statement released by the White House in recent days, the program offers the following benefits for choosing this departure option:
Free Return Home and CBP Return Home Application
1. Create efficient processes so that undocumented immigrants can quickly leave the United States, including through available technological resources, such as the "CBP Return Home" app.
2. All flights provided to undocumented immigrants who voluntarily and permanently leave the United States will be funded by the Federal Government.
3. To facilitate voluntary travel, assistance will be provided in obtaining the necessary travel documents upon voluntarily leaving the country.
4. Create a concierge service through which any alien illegally present in the United States can arrive at an airport, with or without the appropriate travel documents, book a flight to permanently relocate to another country, and apply for the exit bonus described in section 2 of this proclamation upon successful return.
And, what about the “Departure Bonus”?
The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the heads of all relevant agencies, will offer financial incentives in the form of a “departure bonus” to each undocumented alien who voluntarily and permanently departs the United States.
While travel funding and financial assistance will be provided prior to the departure of undocumented aliens to assist with flight booking and travel arrangements, the $1,000 stipend is only offered after the undocumented alien has successfully returned home, as verified by the CBP Home app.
